Accounting and business consulting firm KPMG in the UK was the highest ranked accountancy firm in the Environment Agency’s Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) league table published this week, ranking 99th out of some 2,100 organisations listed.

The Performance League Table ranks organisations who have entries to the CRC based on how they manage their energy efficiency.

The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme was introduced by the UK government in 2008 to invite organisations that meet the qualification criteria, based on how their electricity consumption.

The CRC legislation requires participants to measure and report energy usage to the Government; submit to audits by regulators; pay for carbon emissions; and be publicly ranked in an annual league table.

KPMG, using its own client-facing Climate Change & Sustainability team, has taken a range of steps to manage its carbon footprint effectively, including the installation of smart meters, gaining Carbon Trust Standard certification for its carbon footprint measuring and reporting, installing a Building Management System (BMS) in many of its 22 offices in order to improve monitoring and efficiency of energy usage, and putting a range of sustainability features at the heart of the design of its new headquarter building in Canary Wharf, London.

“We are pleased to make the top 100 in the league table, as managing our carbon footprint is extremely important to us,” Mike Kelly, Head of CSR at KPMG, said.

“However, there is always more to do and the metrics for future league tables will focus more on absolute reductions in energy consumption compared to prior years – meaning that no one can afford to stand still. Finding ways to lower our carbon footprint is a long-term commitment at KPMG,” Kelly added.
