The next time when you decide to hire an accountant, do not waste your time or your candidate’s time. It could be much easier than it seems and this starts by developing a focused and clear job description. Not having a clear job description, choosing and attracting the ideal person is already difficult because you have not taken time in clarifying who that person should be. In turn, candidates lack the ability of determining whether that job is suitable for them or not. This means that you are likely to end up receiving tons of CVs that are unsuitable for this role.

The following step guide if followed helps in improving the process of hiring by focusing on a great job description:

Begin Strong
Make an introduction of your candidates to the culture of your company. You will not just be looking for various skills for crunching the numbers. You will be looking for the total individual; one who can get the ground running, get along with the other members of the team and drive the company’s mission. The ideal candidates will be excited by what they read in the job description.

Outlining the New Duties of the Accountant
Most of the employees think that job descriptions are just simple advertisements. In reality, they serve as clear expectation sets used in giving candidates an ideal picture of how they will be making contributions to the accounting department from day one while on the job. Every duty needs to be listed here. Among the examples may include sales reports analysis, monthly forecasts preparation, accounts resolution and carrying out audits. Whenever possible, use numbers. In case you need a five business day’s turnaround in the completion of company tax returns, state that. Upon joining your organization, this portion of the Job description can be used to draft goals that are SMART in order to keep track of their performances.

Listing of Experience and Skills Needed
If you do not feel comfortable hiring a candidate with less than three years of experience, state that clearly. In case the job requires using such software as Financial Edge Intacct or Xero which the accountant should know, say that too. In case you get the ideal person, you can even train on the job, however inform them of what they should expect. Select 3 or 4 must haves and some bit of nice to have and ensure that they are labeled clearly.
